Under the hood, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade retains the 420 hp 6.2L V8 engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission from last year. For the price it asks, Cadillac has made sure to provide the choice between RWD and AWD drivetrain from the base Luxury trim itself. 2021 Cadillac Escalade Engine: Power, Torque, Transmission, and Drivetrain

Pop the giant hood of the 2021 Cadillac Escalade and you will find the same 6.2L V8 engine under the hood that held the fort in the last generation in 2020. Despite its age, the V8 is honed to churn out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque which is more than enough to get this mammoth SUV moving. The engine comes hooked up to a 10-speed shiftable automatic transmission and offers the choice between RWD and AWD across the entire trim range.

While the big-block V8 surely grunts, it is mostly controlled as the overall system is mostly docile. The transmission is adaptive and puts the power to the right places depending on the drive mode you choose. Furthermore, if you yearn for more performance, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade offers a performance upgrade package for $2,795 wherein you get the performance intake and a Cat-back performance exhaust.

Compared to its rivals, the Cadillac Escalade is the only one that does justice to its dimensions with a big block V8 which is adequately powerful. That being said, for the extra price, the Lincoln Navigator offers a smaller engine with more power and a 50 lb-ft more torque. The BMW X7 is the torquiest ride of the lot with one of the cheapest price tags while the Mercedes Benz GLS-Class packs an even smaller engine with the least amount of torque.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Acceleration: 0-60 MPH, Quarter Mile Time, and Top Speed

While the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is made for traveling in style, class, and luxury, gearheads cannot help but flooring the throttle to push the V8 to the limit. In the Sport or Track mode, the 420 hp gets to work and allows the ride to go from 0-60 mph in just 6.0 seconds which decent for its humongous size and build.

Stretch it for the quarter-mile, and that distance comes up in 14.4 seconds from a standstill. With a top speed of 154 MPH, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is certainly not short on power or performance despite being hefty and bulky. With the performance upgrade pack, the acceleration times drop by 0.1 seconds across the board.

Straight off the line, the BMW X7 manages to cross the line the fastest in both the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile sprints. The Mercedes Benz GLS-Class and the Lincoln Navigator match each other in the 0-60 mph sprint, however, the Merc loses its vigor in the quarter-mile. The Cadillac Escalade starts out slow in the 0-60 mph acceleration but picks up the pace in the quarter-mile.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Brakes: F/R Rotor Dimensions, and 60-0 MPH Stopping Distance

Behind the 22-inch wheels, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade comes with 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with ABS from Duralife. Borrowed from the pickup truck range, you get 13.6-inch rotors at the front and 13-inch rotors at the back which help in maintaining calm and composure even under duress to handle the 5,635 lbs vehicle.

The brake pedal is weighted quite well, and starts out a little mute but springs to life immediately after the halfway point. Thanks to the overall refined nature of braking, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade manages to brake from 60-0 mph in a stopping distance of 121 feet which is decent enough for the ride. It also comes with safety features that actuate the brakes when needed.

Despite weighing the most, the Lincoln Navigator manages to stop decently in a short distance of 125 feet. The BMW X7 is the lightest and naturally brakes in the shortest distance in the 60-0 mph test. The GLS-Class surprises with the longest distance in the brake test despite having the biggest brakes in this lineup. The Escalade manages to procure the second place for itself.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Ride and Handling

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade ride is more comfortable than you would expect it to be, it feels like it glides on the road thanks to the newly fitted adaptive air-ride suspension and magnetic ride control. The air-ride suspension is a feature that does help with cornering as well as maneuverability in the city as well as on the highways. The magnetic ride control also helps in reducing body roll, which given its dimensions is quite a lot while turning, but nothing to scare the bejesus out of you.

One of the changes that happened with the change in the platform was the overall driving character that has become more refined. The steering wheel is a lot more responsive while the drive modes allow you to tap into the full caliber of the V8. Furthermore, the interior remains completely isolated from the outside world and is serene to be in while traveling long distances. Despite its bad-boy image, the classic good boy ride quality remains intact for the 2021 Escalade.

2021 Cadillac Escalade MPG Figures, Fuel Tank Capacity, and Range

The Achilles' Heel of the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is the fuel economy it offers. Though it retains the all-American approach of the big-block V8, the MPG figures take a significant hit. You get 15 MPG in the city, and 20 MPG on the highway, which leads to combined gas mileage of 17 MPG overall. While this might seem inconsequential for an 80-grand ride, the overall costs of ownership will rise. And that sounds like "Cha-Ching!"

2021 Cadillac Escalade information display

Though the MPG figures are subpar, the saving grace comes in the form of the 24-gallon fuel tank that allows the 2021 Cadillac Escalade to offer an overall range of 408 miles at full capacity. For the people who want a more fuel-efficient steed, the 2021 Cadillac Diesel with the turbodiesel V6 should be the one to opt for.

Amongst the rivals, the BMW X7 takes the pole position with the best MPG figures. The Mercedes Benz GLS-Class comes in next with just 1 MPG lesser on the highway and combined but fitted with a bigger fuel tank. The Lincoln Navigator matches the ethos of the Escalade with gas-guzzling MPG figures. However, the Navigator still manages to offer better MPG figures than the Escalade overall.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Performance Verdict

With the full redesign, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade has nailed down a lot of aspects of a value for money proposition. While the standard powertrain is a tried and tested unit, it is not particularly pocket-friendly overall. That being said, besides that flaw, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is a great performer for the price you pay for it and is certainly one to add to your garage.
